The 2015 Goshen Cheerleading Squad is busily getting ready for the start of fall season by spending the summer practicing and experimenting with new routines.

Over the past few days, Goshen kicked their training into high gear as both the varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads participated in a UCA summer camp at Auburn University.

The girls spent June 21 through the 24 at the camp and Goshen cheerleading coach Angie Thomas said the girls had great time in Auburn.

“It was a lot of hard work, and a lot of long days,” Thomas said. “But, we had a great time and we are very excited about the final outcome of course. I am the coach of both squads, but I could not have done it without a lot of help from my volunteers Kelly Kelly and Tyra Graham.”

For the first three days of the camp, each squad had the opportunity to learn new techniques and to learn to choreographed routines from the members of the Universal Cheerleading Association.

After the three days of practicing and training, the camp put on a competition on the final day giving the teams the opportunity to showcase what they learned.

Each squad competed in four events at the end of the camp: Game day competition, an Extreme Routine, a cheer and finally a chant.

Both the varsity and JV cheer squads finished the competition strong.

The JV squad won all four events, while the Varsity team was right behind them winning the game day event, as well as the extreme routine and cheer. The varsity squad finished in second place for the chant.

The cheerleading squad was not the only one to walk away winners.

Tessa Little, the GHS Eagle, walked away from competition winning the superior award for Goshen.

“The mascots went to different classes,” Thomas said. “They trained in different mascot materials and different things. She did well winning the superior award.”

Each squad was also able to have six girls try out for All American Cheerleader. Out of the six that tried out, Katie Thomas, Casey Allen, Carmen Kelly, Lexi Ellisor and Brooke Fortune were selected.

Thomas and Ellisor were also invited to try out for the UCA staff.

The girls form the JV squad that participated in the camp were Gracie Redmond, Molly Wares, Caitlin Hughes, Taylor Hutto, Julie Johns, Olivia Kyzar, Gracy Hughes, Grace Qualls, Adrien Bundy, Avery Henderson, Selena Warren and Morgan Wilkes.

The members of the varsity squad that participated in the camp were Thomas, Allen, Ellisor, Kelly, Keijah Calhoun, Fortune, Selena Ellis, Camille Kelly, Masey Walker, Anna Grace Thomas, Lydia Harrison, Aleyah Daniels and Kate Warrick.

Now that the camp is finished for Goshen, the Eagles Cheerleading squad will dedicate the rest of the summer preparing for the start of the fall season.
