Two golfers at Charles Henderson High School have qualified for the AHSAA sectional golf tournament, and the entire team had a strong showing in an invitational match at the Troy Country Club against Andalusia Wednesday.

CHHS junior Lindsay Lee and 7th grader Griffin McCrary each have qualified for the sectionals in their respective girls and boys divisions.

Lindsay, who shot an 83 for the second best score in the Thursday match, will travel to Mobile to play at the Azalea City Golf Course, April 27, while Griffin will travel to Calera and the Timberline Golf Course the same date.

CHHS Head Coach Shelby Tuck wears many hats in the athletic programs at the Charles Henderson Middle School as well as the high school in basketball and football, and also serves as the head golf coach for the varsity.

“It has been wonderful to coach these young guys,” said Tuck, in his fourth season as the CHHS head golf coach. “I really feel good about the future of golf at Charles Henderson. We’ve got four eighth graders, a ninth grader and next year we’ll have three seniors on the team. Our biggest goal is to have four or five guys that can compete as a team and qualify for state as a team, versus going as individuals. Don’t get me wrong, going as individuals is great, but we have some guys that are really dedicated and putting in the work, and that is our goal is to field a team in the state tournament.”

The CHHS golf team consists of Juniors Lindsey Lee, Carter Ray, Will Worthington, Max Lee and C.J. Curtis; Freshman Jalen Tuck; 8th graders Cody Paramore, Grant Baker and Grant Wilkes, and 7th grader Griffin McCrary.

“We have played in 13 matches, with today is the last match of the regular season,” said Coach Tuck. “I’m real excited that Lindsay qualified for sectionals, as last year she went to sectionals and missed going to state by two strokes. She is really excited about getting her score down. Last year she shot a 94, and this year she is consistently been mid-80’s. We are looking forward to her going down there and competing and doing a great job for us.

“Griffin is a 7th grader, he is a little one, but he is a ball of fire. He’s really been awesome this year, been around 90-to-92, and a couple of rounds in the 80’s. He’s just been very consistent. He really works hard on his game. He and Lindsey both spend countless hours on the golf course, every day of the week. You just don’t see them here at practice, but also on a Saturday or a Sunday.”
