Camp Stew on sale Thursday

Kim May knows a good thing when it comes along. When Carter Sanders came back to town, she saw opportunity coming her way.

As the director of the Salvation Army Service Center in Troy, May is always looking for ways to help fund the programs offered through the service center that benefit friends and neighbors.

“Winter weather is camp stew time in Alabama, and people had been asking when we were going to have camp stew for sale again,” May said. “Carter is known for his camp stew and has always been so generous to make it for the Salvation Army. When I found out that he would be in the country for a while, I thought I would twist his arm and get him to cook camp stew for us.”

Sanders is a former member of the local Salvation Army’s advisory board and continues to support the charitable organization. May did not have to do any arm-twisting to get him to agree to cook his famous camp stew as a fundraiser.

The camp stew sale is set for Thursday with pick up times between noon and 6 p.m. at the Salvation Army Service Center and Thrift Store at 509 South Brundidge Street in Troy.

“This is an impromptu camp stew sale, so we’re not selling advance tickets,” May said. “We are just asking those who want to purchase the camp stew to call the Salvation Army Service Center at 334-808-1969 with their name and how many quarts they would like.”

The camp stew is $10 a quart, and all funds raised will support the programs offered through the Salvation Army.

“I would like to encourage everyone to visit our Thrift Store when they come to pick up their camp stew or to just make a special trip to the Thrift Store to take advantage of the sale that we have going,” May said. “All women’s and children’s clothing, shoes and purses are on sale at buy one and get one free prices. That’s a tremendous savings and we have some really nice items available. This is a great time to shop the Thrift Store and save.”

Donations of clothes, shoes, house ware items, furniture and miscellaneous items are always needed and appreciated.
