Memorial Day brings the unofficial start to summer and the travel season, and with it comes the annual “Click It or Ticket campaign.
Click it or Ticket is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign aimed at increasing the use of seat belts among young people in the United States.
“There will be stopping points for ‘Click it or Ticket’ at various points on roadways this weekend,” said Sgt. Steve Jarrett of the Department of Public Safety. “State troopers enforce seat belt violations throughout the year but grant funds provided by Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs will allow for additional seat belt enforcement” this weekend.
Officials said drivers should expect up to the three times the normal traffic on highways, including U.S. 231 which runs through Pike County.
“Make sure you car upkeep is up to date, and be more defensive than normal when driving,” said  Sgt. Bryan Weed of the Troy Police Department. “Safety should always be a number one priority.”
There are over 15 road closures and advisories on Alabama roads this weekend, and the Department of Transportation has a website listing these. To find out if your trip will be held delayed go to www.dot.state.al.us.
