Burial will be at Old Mt Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Goshen on Goshen Road

Visitation will be held 1:00 to 5:30 PM Wednesday 5/21/14 at George Grubbs Funeral Home.

Compassionate Sister, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Friend. First daughter of Isom and Mitchell Lee (Davis) Owens, Serdell was born October 29, 1914 in Pike County, Alabama.

Serdell was united in marriage to Dobb Stringer. Of that union, six children were born: Irene, C W, Idell, Dobbie, Willie and Cleveland.

Serdell had a dedicated relationship with God. Serdell was baptized at an early age and served at Old Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church and later, New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Serdell was very involved with her church family and loved singing as a member of the church choir. She regularly attended Bible Study and when she couldn’t go, the church came to her.

Serdell was a faithful member for many many years of the Wilkerson Beauty Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #290

Serdell’s hobbies included growing both vegetables and flowers. She was well known for her gardening skills and her collard greens were the talk of the town. She had a special talent for baking pound cakes. She enjoyed traveling in her later years and was a member of a travel club.

Widowed at an early age, Serdell held down numerous jobs in order to support her children, yet she was never too busy to encourage her children to attend church, love God and to get a good education.

Serdell got her high school diploma and later became a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in 1960. She spent most of her career being a personal caregiver for many individuals in the city of Troy.

Serdell was preceded in death by her parents Isom and Mitchell Lee Owens, her husband, Dobb Stringer, her sons C W and Cleveland, her sisters Hazel and Olean and her brothers Motel, Emmanuel and Elmer.

Serdell leaves to cherish her memory: daughters Irene Blue, Idell (Dink) Shipman and Dobbie (Timothy) Smith, son Willie Stringer and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Humbly Submitted, The Family
