Adoptions are wonderful events – for the new parents and their child.

But there are other adoptions that are meaningful also – the adoption of a resident in a nursing home.

Each year at Christmastime, Troy Health and Rehabilitation Center offers opportunities for people of the community to “Adopt a Resident” and help make the season extra special for someone whose Christmas might not be as bright otherwise.

Jeanette Dawkins, TH&R activities director, said all of the residents appreciate being remembered at Christmastime.

“But we have some residents whose families live far away and aren’t able to visit often,” she said. “And, there are others who don’t have family at all. These are the ones who really appreciate being remembered at Christmas.

“It’s true that at Christmas people tend to focus on the children and I know those struggling do appreciate the help. But I think about the residents that I have the joy to know.”

TH&R has an annual Christmas party for its residents and all of the residents receive a gift from Santa.

“Santa passes out the gifts before the party by going room to room and spending some time with each resident,” Dawkins said.

“It would be great if our community would once again help by sponsoring a resident. It’s easy and it means so much to our residents.”

Adopting a resident is easy. Call Dawkins at 334-566-0880 and tell her whether you would prefer a male or female resident.

“I will give you the room number of the resident and the resident’s wish list,” Dawkins said. “Then you get as many of the things on the list as you wish. It’s that easy.

“I would like to say thanks to everyone in advance for supporting the TH&R ‘Adopt a Resident’ program and for making that resident feel loved and not forgotten.”
