Pike County Schools OKs 11 new hires

The Pike County Board of Education brought the Pike County High School field house one step closer to reality Monday afternoon by awarding the construction bid to Whaley Construction Company of Troy. The bid award was in the amount of $1,456,321.

The board also approved 11 hires, four voluntary transfers, a re-employment and a contracted service and accepted three resignations at its regular June 17 meeting.

Dr. Mark Bazzell, superintendent of Pike County Schools, said following the actions of the board, open positions remain for a guidance counselor and English teacher at Goshen High School, a fifth-grade teacher at Goshen Elementary School, a health teacher at Pike County High School, secretary to the superintendent, a team leader at the bus shop, and a bus driver.

In personnel action, the board:

• Approved the request for Ronald Floyd to continue his employment as bus driver for the Pike County Board of Education while completing his internship at Goshen High School for his bachelor’s degree in mathematics/secondary education from Troy University. The internship will not conflict with his duties.

• Accepted the resignation of Joanne Dolbear due to heath reasons, effective Aug. 31.

• Accepted the resignation of Donnie Smith as teacher/coach from Pike County High School effective immediately.

• Accepted the resignation of Buffy Lusk, guidance counselor from Goshen High School, effective June 10.

• Approved catastrophic leave for Kerri Taylor, Pike County Elementary School for six weeks, beginning July 29.

• Approved catastrophic leave for Kristie Deloney, Pike County Elementary School from the middle of September for six to eight weeks.

• Approved the hiring of Donna Vinson for a full-time bus driver position.

• Approved the hiring of Desmond Gibson for a full-time bus driver position.

• Approved the hiring of Artellis Howard as CNP worker at Pike County Elementary School beginning Aug. 8.

• Approved the voluntary transfer of Mike Waters from physical education teacher at Pike County High School to social studies teacher at PCHS.

• Approved the hiring of Doug Holland for the position of physical education teacher at Pike County High School for the 2013-2014 school year.

• Approved the hiring of Ann Renee Bentley for the science teacher position at Banks School.

• Approved the hiring of Tony Ogleclark for the science teacher position at Goshen High School.

• Approved the hiring of David Kirkland for the social science teaching position at Goshen High School.

• Approved the hiring of Marshall McGlaun for the social science teaching position at Goshen High School.

• Approved the hiring of Zachary Searels for the math teacher at Pike County High School.

• Approved the hiring of David Trawick for math teacher at Pike County High School.

• Approved the hiring of Jerrel Duckworth for the position of choir/music teacher at Pike County High School.

• Approved the voluntary transfer of Laura Ellis from second grade teacher at Banks to academic coach at Banks School.

• Approved the voluntary transfer of Beth Melton from fifth-grade teacher at Goshen Elementary School to the position of gifted education teacher in the Pike County School System.

• Approved the voluntary transfer of Amy Norris from Pike County Elementary School fourth-grade teacher to second grade teacher at Banks School.

• Approved the re-employment of Tori Hopkins as fourth-grade teacher at Pike County Elementary.

• Approved Henry Everette to provide contracted services as music aide at Banks School for the 2013-2014 school year.

In other action, the board:

• Approved removal of an 8×6 plastic greenhouse at Goshen High School Agriculture Academy from non-capitalized inventory.

• Approved the use of classroom space at Pike County Elementary School by the Community Action Head Start program beginning June 3 through July 19 for a summer program.

• Retroactively approved the out-of-state trip to Florida State for the PCHS football players on June 15. The football team and sports boosters will be responsible for all expenses.

• Approved the out-of-state trip for Sharon Denison on July 9-12 to Orlando, Florida to attend the 2013 National Academy Foundation’s Annual Institute for Staff Development. All expenses will be covered by the National Academy Foundation and Career Tech.
