Local athletes sign scholarships with community colleges

Two local athletes in two different sports inked scholarships deals with community colleges this week.

Tyler Mitchell, a forward on the Charles Henderson boys basketball team, signed with Enterprise State Community College on Tuesday morning at a ceremony at Charles Henderson High School.

Mitchell, a two-time “The Messenger Player of the Year,” led the Trojans to a perfect area record during his senior year, and a trip to the regional round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association tournament.

In addition to playing forward, Mitchell was called upon to handle the ball at times and set up the Charles Henderson offense. During his senior season, Mitchell developed into a solid offensive player, routinely driving the to the basket and drawing fouls.

Mitchell joins an ESCC team that struggled mightily last season.

The Boll Weevils limped to a 5-22 record in 2012-13 and look for Mitchell to compete for playing time early in his career.

Hannah Goodson, a senior catcher on the Zion Chapel softball team, will further her academic and athletic goals at Wallace Community College in Dothan as she signed a scholarship on Tuesday afternoon.

Goodson led the Lady Rebels to an area tournament championship, despite being seeded last in the tournament.

Goodson joins a Wallace team that has had numerous successes over the years.

The Wallace Lady Govs is one of the finest Junior College programs in the country. The Lady Govs have won the Alabama Community College Southern Division 10 out of 12 years as well as 3 state titles since 2000.
