Pike County is opening its doors to pickers and bargain hunters as the area takes part in the World’s Widest Yard Sale beginning May 31.

“Last year, organizers went along the U.S. Highway 80 corridor, now they are going ‘and beyond,’” said Pike County Chamber of Commerce President Kathleen Sauer. “We are part of that ‘and beyond.’”

The yard sale is in its second year and spans more than 300 miles. The event runs May 31 through June 2 and there are four participating sites in the Pike County area – Lee’s Antiques, Jinright’s Hillside Antiques, the Pioneer Museum of Alabama and the Shriner’s Flea Market.

“All anyone has to do is call one of those locations and request to set up a booth,” Sauer said, noting that locations could charge a nominal fee to set up.

The World’s Widest Yard Sale is sponsored by Alabama Rural Development Office and Sauer said there will be advertising done to garner national media attention. The four locations in Pike County will also be listed in a brochure for the event, which could mean added revenue for the area through visitor stops at restaurants, gas stations and other locations.

“It’s going to be three days of bargain hunting and side trips,” Sauer said. “We aren’t sure what to expect, but we are excited about being a part of this.”
