George L. Reeves

George L. Reeves, 84, of Troy, Alabama passed away peacefully on March 31, 2013. He was born on May 10, 1928, and resided in Troy until he joined the United States Navy in 1945, at the age of seventeen. In 1949, following a two week courtship, he married Louise Boutwell. George’s naval career took them away from Troy for many years, but during that time, they met so many people who remained lifetime friends. He retired from the Navy after 20 years as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. His love for his country and his flag never wavered. George then enjoyed a twenty year career with Commercial Union Insurance in Montgomery and Birmingham. After his second retirement, he and Louise returned to Troy where he worked with the Ken Cox until 1992.

George was very active in his communities and volunteered with Civitan International. He served as Governor of Alabama Central District and was the International Director for Zone I. George received the International Honor Key Award, the highest honor bestowed on members in recognition of his service to the organization. He was also recognized as aCivitan International Foundation Fellow. George was a member of the First Baptist Church of Troy and the Baraca Sunday School class.

George was preceded in death by his father, Grady L. Reeves and his sister, Margene Phillips.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 63 years, Louise Boutwell Reeves of Troy, and by his brother, Homer Reeves (Sally) of Troy, and sister, Dot Pinkerton of Pensacola, Florida. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Ruby Andress and Sue Ann Boutwell of Troy, his brothers-in-law Ray (Dot) Boutwell of Suwanee, Georgia, and Lamar Boutwell of Panama City,Florida, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 11:00 am, in the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Troy with Dr. Luke Lane officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery in Troy.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Boutwell, Glenn Ellis, Pat Gilbert, Benny Scarbrough, Grady Reeves, and Gary Turner. Honorary Pallbearers will be the First Baptist Church of Troy Baraca Sunday School Class.
