Published 11:10am Friday, March 1, 2013

Overview: Troy hosts No. 24 Southern Mississippi in a three-game series at Riddle-Pace Field. The Trojans spit their midweek games falling to Alabama State on Tuesday (4-3) before defeating Jackson State (7-2) on Wednesday. Southern Miss fell to Sun Belt foe Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday (6-5) and have lost both road games the team has played this season.

Game times: Friday 6pm, Saturday 1pm, Sunday 1pm

The Series: Southern Miss leads the all-time series 8-11. Troy lost 2-of-3 to the Golden Eagles last season in Hattiesburg.

What to Watch: Though Troy’s offensive production has slowed over the last few games, the team is still averaging a whopping 10.1 points per game, which ranks fifth in the country. Southern Miss will counter Troy’s powerful attack with a strong pitching staff. Andrew Pierce (2-0, 0.63) will take the mound in the opener. The senior has struck out 14 batters in 14.1 innings of work. Jake Drehoff (0-1, 2.79) will likely start on Saturday with Mason Robbins (1-0, 1.50) pitching on Sunday.

Troy will send Will Starling (2-0, 2.25) to the mound on Friday. Shane McCain (1-0, 4.50) will throw on Saturday and Tanner Hicks (1-0, 4.50) take the hill on Sunday for the Trojans.
