Troy’s hometown hero who received national recognition when the Brickyard 400 was renamed the Curtiss Shaver Brickyard 400, will soon be off on another adventure.

The advertising agency that worked on the Crown Royal “Your Hero’s Name Here” contest which Shaver won is flying him and his wife, Traci, to the Big Apple.

The agency is being rewarded for their efforts on the campaign and they want Shaver to help them accept the award.

“I am very excited,” Shaver said. “I would love to meet some of the firefighters there and visit some of the stations while we are in New York.”

The Shavers leave for a whirlwind trip on Monday and return Wednesday night. Neither have ever been to the City that Never Sleeps.

“Until this contest and the trip to Indianapolis for the race, the furthest north we’d been was the mountains,” Shaver said.

Shaver’s road to becoming a firefighter wasn’t an easy one. When he was 18, he lost part of his leg in a farming accident. It was his enduring spirit and hard work that lead fellow firefighter Brandy Cox to nominate him for the Crown Royal award.

“It’s still kind of hard to believe this has all happened,” Shaver said of his recognition.

“When bad things happen to you, they don’t define you. What defines you is what you do afterwards.”
