CHHS to host both area tourneys

The gym will be rocking at Betty Wagoner Hall this weekend as both the Charles Henderson boys and girls basketball teams host area tournaments.

Both teams cruised through area play with unblemished records, and are set to hose the same area teams inside the friendly confines of their home gym.

Despite building an impressive winning streak during the second half of the season, and getting nominated for the Alabama Sports Writers Association top ten, the Trojans have the work cut out for them in the area tourney.

Trojans head coach Carl Hollis said that now is not the time for the team to rest on their laurels.

“Little things are important,” Hollis said. “We have to remember the things that got us to where we are, things like defense, following shots, and boxing out. That’s all effort. We have to keep working, one bad night and our season is done, and we are at the house.”

By claiming the area title, Charles Henderson will host the area tournament and get the top seed. The Trojans have had good showings in front of the friendly, hometown crowd inside Betty Wagoner Hall this season, but Hollis said that it is a huge factor.

“We are happy to get to play at home,” Hollis said. “But we will play it anywhere. We have the home-court advantage, but it all comes down to us playing hard and smart.”

The Charles Henderson girls team is also set to host the area tournament. The Lady Trojans pitched a perfect area record under the direction of Dyneshia Jones.

Taj Brundidge, India Blakely, Joyia Porter and Alexis Jones lead the Trojan girls in to the tourney, which tips off Thursday night.

The Charles Henderson girls open against Bullock County at 7 p.m. Headland and Ashford get the action started at 5:30 p.m.

The Trojan boys tip off on Friday night against Ashford at Betty Wagoner Hall at 7 p.m. The first game of the night will feature Headland and Bullock County also at 5:30 p.m.

The championship games for both girls and boys will be Monday Feb. 11 at Wagoner Hall on the campus of Charles Henderson High School.
