The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee will present the 29th Commemorative event honoring the American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement at County Line Baptist Church in Brundidge Sunday night.

King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004.

Martin Luther King Day was established as a United States federal holiday in 1986.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Program was organized by Fannie Davenport as a way of letting young people know about King’s contributions.

“The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee wants young people to know about Dr. King and his many contributions and draw from that,” said Lois Robinson, committee member. “The Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee takes this opportunity to provide scholarship aid to one high school senior and monetary donations to others to encourage them to be vibrant and to have a strong presence in the community.”

The Rev. Bobby Cox of Mobile will be the featured speaker at the 2013 commemorative event.

“Reverend Cox is a former pastor of St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Troy and is well known in Pike County,” Robinson said. “We are fortunate to have him lead our 29th commemorative program honoring Dr. King.”

Robinson said a highlight of the event will be the reading of an excerpt of from King’s “I Have a Dream” speech delivered during the 1963 March on Washington.

“The reading will be by Amazhie Lampley, a fourth-grade student at Pike County Elementary School,” Robinson said. “This will be a very moving and enlightening part of the program.

“Special music will be handled by Dorothy Townsend, Brandon McClure and Isabell Boyd. We will have a mixed choir from County Line Baptist Church and surrounding churches.”

The 29th Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Program will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at County Line Baptist Church in Brundidge. Everyone is invited to attend.
