City urges Christmas tree recycling

Christmas is over and many people are left wondering what to do with evergreen trees now that the tinsel and ornaments are down.

The City of Troy will be collecting used Christmas Trees on regular garbage pick-up days. Residents simply need to place the tree at the curb to be removed by the city.

Troy Public Works Department Director Vaughn Daniels said the trees will continue to be removed through the end of January, in case anyone is reluctant to let go of the holidays just yet.

And just because the tree may have finished its purpose as a Christmas decoration, doesn’t mean it is now useless.

“We want to try to recycle as many Christmas trees as possible, which will save space in the landfill, and also the cost of putting them there,” Daniels explained. “They can be used in ponds to create a reef that will last for five or six years.”

Daniels said another use is to shred the trees for mulch.
