Charles Henderson got its 2012-13 basketball season started a little later than usual due to the football team’s run to the third round of the playoffs, but they opened on a good note with a 75-67 win over Class 6A foe Dothan on Thursday.

After trailing 34-33 at halftime, the Trojans (1-0) opened the second half on a 14-point run with baskets from Tyler Mitchell, Josh Noel and Jhakendall Johnson.

The lead faded quickly, however, as Dothan scored the game’s next eight points and went on a 12-2 run to cut the Charles Henderson lead to three, 49-46.

From that point it was a back and forth affair.

After Dothan’s Trey Jackson sandwiched a pair of three’s around a Mitchell jumper, Johnson drained a three and Devontai Jordan followed with a lay in to build the Trojan advantage to 60-52.

With 30 second remaining, Jordan Neal hit a three-pointer for Dothan to bring the game within three, 69-67. The Trojans used quick decisions and solid ball handling to outwit the Tigers’ defense. Javante King found Noel under the basket for a easy basket with 24 seconds left. Mitchell was good on a pair of free-throws and rimmed in another basket at the buzzer to ice the game for the Trojans.

For Charles Henderson, Mitchell finished with 27 points. Johnson added 15 while Noel and Davantez Jackson scored eight points each.

For Dothan, Jackson had 20 points. Chris Graham had 10.

The Trojans will next face Carroll in Ozark on Dec. 7.
