Three Troy soccer teams brought home runner-up finishes at the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association State Tournament in Dothan on Sunday.

The 18-and-under team fell in a sudden death shootout in the championship round to Eufaula, the 15-and-under squad lost to the host team, Dothan, and the 9-and-under team came up short against Alexander City.

The fifteen-year-old team also lost in a shootout. Dothan defender Donald Law fired the winning shot in to the top right corner of the net to keep the state title at home in “The Circle City.”

Dothan and Troy were tied at three at the end of regulation, and tied again after the first round of penalty kicks in the shootout. The first round of kicks uses five players that go one-on-one with the opposing team’s goalkeeper. Both teams made three kicks in the first round.

The second round is sudden death, meaning the game would continue only until a team scored and then kept the other team from scoring. Troy and Dothan both scored on the first attempt and the Dothan goalkeeper blocked the next Troy attempt. Law was up next and ended the game on his kick.

The 9-and-under team fell in the opening game of their pool play tournament to Alex City 1-0. From that point on the team played from behind and never caught up even though they ran through the rest of the competition.

“After the first game, we were just fighting for second place the rest of the time,” said assistant coach David Nelson. “It kind of got us behind the eight ball, and you hate to have that because I think we could have one the state title.”

Nelson said that if a couple of shots had gone their way in the opening round, Troy could have hoisted the trophy.

“We had some good shots,” said Nelson. “Their goalkeeper made some great saves that kept us from scoring points.”
