On Tuesday, the Pike County 4-H will officially begin an archery club.

The initial meeting to register youth will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Pike County Extension Office.

“At the meeting, we will discuss various topics such as future meeting dates and competitions,” said Grant Lyons, Pike County Extension coordinator. “We are looking forward to forming this club and offering another way for our youth to become involved, not only in 4-H, but also in an educational and recreational activity they can participate in for the rest of their lives.”

The archery club will offer youth everything from archery instruction and safety to travel and competitions.

“In addition, youth will interact with one another and work together to promote the sport to others,” Lyons said.

“This will be a hands-on club with certified archery coaches working with our youth. Of course, safety is our number one priority. We also want to make sure we are educating these youth on the sport of archery and helping them become better and more proficient with their equipment.”

Youth who are interested do not need to own a bow. The Extension office will have several available at future meetings thanks to a grant from the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Brundidge.

“We are especially grateful to the Wal-Mart Distribution Center for helping make this club a reality,” Lyons said.

“We cannot offer these types of clubs without the support of others and we are grateful to all who continue to support 4-H and our youth.”

The 4-H archery club is open to youth ages nine through 19.

“If youth are not already enrolled in 4-H, there will be registration sheets available at the meeting,” Lyons said.

Those who are interested in becoming members of the 4-H archery club but are unable to attend the meeting are encouraged to call the Extension office at 334-566-0985 for more information.
