GUNTERSVILLE – Troy’s Dixie Pre-Majors were hammered 10-0 by Westside Thursday afternoon.

Luke Hastings would single up the middle in the second inning for Troy’s only hit in the state tournament opener.

Westside, however, got the bats going early and often. Leading 4-0, the District 7 champs led off the third with three consecutive singles before Blake Mathis launched a grand slam.

“That hurt,” head coach Brock Kelley said. “That was a big hit for them.”

Troy would have one positive, however. John Michael Stephens relieved starter Houston Mabray in the third and shut Westside down for 3 2/3 innings. In the sixth, however, Westside would get to Stephens.

After a fielding error and a strikeout, Winston Mathis hit a 2-run homerun invoking the ten-run mercy rule and ending the game.

“We just got creamed,” Kelley said following the game. “We didn’t hit and they did.”

Troy earned their spot in Guntersville by defeating Columbia last week.

Troy will play District 8 winner Jackson County today at 12:30 p.m. A win and Troy stays alive to play on Saturday.

A loss will end Troy’s state run. Stay tuned to www.troymessenger.com for updates.
