Updated: Troy suspends fraternity over ABC raid

Published 7:48am Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Troy University has temporarily suspended a fraternity pending its investigation into an ABC raid at an off-campus party that led to more than 50 arrests.

Herbert Reeves, dean of students at Troy, said “a little over half” the 50 people arrested early Wednesday were either Troy students or those scheduled to begin classes in the fall. The individuals were arrested after the Alabama Alcohol Beverage Control board raided a party at The Pines restaurant in downtown Troy. The party, reportedly hosted by Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, had been approved by the university, Reeves said.

“It was a social event for the fraternity,” he said. “Any time a there’s an official function or we approve an event, we ask them to abide by the laws of the state.”

Lt. Thomas Price of the ABC said agents received a call a call Tuesday night that minors were consuming alcohol at a party at The Pines restaurant.

“Within two minutes of our going in the front door, we arrested the first person,” Price said about 7 a.m. Wednesday. “And we’re still counting.”

Originally, Price reported that some 75 people had been arrested. By midday, Troy Police said 50 people had been charged with 51 offenses. Most were minor in consumption, although one individual was also charged with a felony drug charge.

Price said early Wednesday he believed more than 300 people attended the party, although that number has not been confirmed.

“They were upstairs, downstairs, outside … even on the roof,” Price said, explaining that four individuals fled to the rooftop when the raid began. “Unfortunately, they couldn’t get back down the hole they used to get up on the roof, so we had to call in the City of Troy ladder truck to help them get down.”

In the state of Alabama, residents must be at least 21 years of age to consume alcohol. Price said anyone under of the age of 21 who registered more than 0.00 when the breath tests were administers was charged with consumption. While he didn’t release names of those charged, Price said the arrests included Troy University football players and female basketball players. He also said two juveniles – ages 16 and 17 – were involved in the raid.

“It was a dangerous situation,” Price said.

Reeves said the university was still investigating to determine which students were involved in the incident. Any who were charged would face the same disciplinary action, he said, which could include probation.

“We’re disappointed in the fact that a situation like this has happened,” Reeves said. “Our stance is that we ask our students to comply with the laws of Alabama.”

Price said the agency would pursue disciplinary action against the chapter and restitution for expenses incurred with the use of the city fire truck.

The Pines Restaurant could face citations, as well, Price said.

Price said the bust “is the largest in my 18 years with the state ABC board.”

Chief Anthony Everage of the Troy Police said those charged in the bust were being processed and released from the city jail early Wednesday morning.

Interesting. A black fraternity getting busted for underage drinking. So this must never happen at any of the white fraternities. Because you never read about it in the paper and I am sure the law is being enforced equally regardless of which organization it is.

Well, holding a frat party at a public restaurant where you plan on serving alcohol to minors is not very bright. I’m sure 300 rowdy college students on the Troy square might have drawn just a little attention to themselves.

Dorf nailed it… The reason that they were at the Pines to begin with is because the exact same thing happened at the Front Porch about 2 years ago… With the exact same group. The biggest loser will be The Pines. This had been coming for quite a while… Whatever the small profit the Pines was making is not near enough to offset the damage to their property and reputation. 18 to 22 year olds just don’t know how to behave, regardless of their skin color.

the race card? I don’t think so. it’s more the IQ factor. Large numbers of underage kids drinking in a public place at an event sponsored by a fraternity? Lights may be on, but no one’s home.

A white fraternity had their charter revoked a few years ago for the continuous disciplinary problems including minors drinking. This was a call from a citizen. The difference between the fraternities is the “white” charters have houses on campus so campus police handle that and unless complaint calls come in they don’t really have the need to go in and make busts. The “black” ones don’t have chapter houses and use local businesses for their parties and are at more risk of having complaints called in. Is it fair or right? No because yes it does go on in all of them, it is just a matter of complaints being made.

That makes sense. So why don’t they just build a house in Fraternity Village for the black fraternity?

I’m not sure. I’ve often wondered why the minority fraternities and sororities don’t have on campus housing. I don’t know if it is just at TROY or at other universities as well. I’ve known several members over the past twenty or so years and never known them to have on campus houses.

If they had the same funding from their ALUMNI and actually didn’t WASTE their money, they might oculd afford a house on campus. Retarddddddd.

          Crusader,

As a member of a black sorority here in Troy, I know that my Alumni members do not waste their money. There are many reasons why there are no housing for the NPHC fraternities and sororities one being that our membership numbers do not always allow for us to have that kind of extra money. Many of our Alumni go on to be successful in their endeavors and continue to support their respective fraternities and sororities in any way possible. I know members and alumni of many different organizations both NPHC and Pan Hellenic(historically black-NPHC historically white-Pan Hellenic) who do not contribute financially once they move on. That is an untrue statement and you should be more cognizant of what you are saying before you make a comment like that.

For the record soldier, I was NOT saying the ALUMNI mispends money. I was referring to the actual frat mispending. (for example, having this party of around 300 at the PINES… very expensive…)

Just a thought on the finger pointing at other fraternities…
When my kids were much younger, I would occasionally catch one of them doing something they weren’t supposed to be doing. AND occasionally one of them would pull the “yeah, but (insert other daughter’s name) did THIS!”. It was the old “forget about me, look over there” tactic. It never worked. I’d tell her this had nothing to do with my
other daughter, I was dealing with the current situation.

Of course, I’d file away the other information for later.

Let me just say that as a student at Troy University, I am very aware of what sororities and fraternities get in the most trouble. Troysoldier is completely right in defending the black fraternities at school. And for all you moron racists out there, the BLACK fraternities have the highest GPA’s on campus. Was this a racist event by our police? NO. All of our sororities and fraternities have been in some trouble or other. That’s just college. This shouldn’t be made into a race issue.

Had the authorities not responded to the call reporting the illegal consumption of alcohol regarding minors, you can bet the racists would have been screaming, “Racism!.” Since they did respond, the racists are screaming, “Racism!” The racists have a pretty good thing going.
